Tree Breeding and Genomic Selection

Nicholas is a Research Scientist and Tree Breeder for the British Columbia Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (BC MFLNRO Forest Genetics Research – learn more).  He is responsible for managing the lodgepole pine, western white pine, ponderosa pine, paper birch and hybrid poplar breeding and genecology programs. Nicholas is very much interested in research related to disease and insect resistance in pines, understanding patterns of adaptation and environmental interactions to refine seed transfer restrictions and investigating approaches to integrate new technologies into conifer breeding programs.

Nicholas is a Registered Professional Forester with the Association of British Columbia Forest Professionals. He is currently a PhD Candidate at the University of British Columbia and his PhD project is a pilot study to investigate the feasibility and options for integrating GBLUP and genomic selection in the lodgepole pine breeding program in British Columbia.
